Perfectly Armored, Part 5

We continue with our look at the Armor of God…

Looking back to Ephesians 6:17, the verse continues speaking about the sword of the spirit. This notion is something we have all crossed many times in the Bible, and it is speaking of the Word of God. The Word of God, our Scriptures, are effectively a sword, but far beyond any steel sword. Hebrews 4:12 says “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Jesus said in Matthew 26:52 that those who live by the sword shall die by it. But I’ll tell you this, that this sword is the only one you can live by and find life eternal! This sword is the word of God! And we are to wield it with the unyielding power of prayer!

Possessing that sword is not enough though, friends. How many unbelievers possess a Bible? How righteous do you have to be to read the Word? I own several actual swords, but to do battle with them I would be extremely disadvantaged for two reasons: I don’t understand how to effectively use them, and I have essentially no practice with such things. Just the same, how are we to effectively rely on the Sword of the Spirit if we haven’t familiarized ourselves with it extensively? How are we to wield it properly if we have no experience with it? My friends, we absolutely cannot neglect the Word and expect to both understand it and rely on it in our times of need! Oh, how we often busy ourselves with everything else we can think of instead of cracking open the Scriptures and reading a bit.

We have all heard about Satan’s Temptation of Christ in the wilderness, found in Matthew 4:1-11. What did the Lord use to battle with Lucifer? The Word. The Word of God is the weapon by which our Lord fought off the temptations of Satan, answering each temptation saying, “It is written” as He would quote the Scriptures! Your Bible a weapon of immense power. Utilize it.

We come now to verse 18, and in many respects this element is our greatest defense and artillery against the enemy:

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints

Prayer! Prayer is without a doubt our most underutilized tool in the battle against spiritual darkness. Not just for ourselves, but for all those whom we pray for!

People, it’s always a good time to boldly go to the Throne of the Everlasting God and cast yourself before it, understanding that with Him and through His magnificent sovereignty, nothing is beyond commision, nothing is beyond achievable! Let us strive to give our best to the Lord! Let us run with everything we have to that Throne and cast before Him golden prayers of fervent supplication and blessing and honor! Let us petition Him not in doubt but with hearts filled with expectancy and faith!

The Message continues next time…
