Children of Faith, Part 1

Children are a gift. They are amazing. To watch their little minds work, to see how they figure this and that out, to know that this tiny person is constantly in the process of become someone who will one day have an impact on the world, is amazing…

To be a parent is truly an experience. Children will teach you so much. They will force you into positions you may have never considered. They will show you the world in a whole new way if you let them … and if you can handle it. I’m obsessive about the way I like my home and my workspace. I also have three young children. Those two elements simply don’t mix well…

The Bible says a lot about Children. It starts in Genesis with this Creation of this universe and everything in it. Soon after, we read about the fall of man, of how Adam and Eve took matters into their own hands and decided what was good, even though they had been warned by God against it. So, creation fell. Their actions condemned the universe to suffer pain, disease, and death now until the end of days.

One aspect of the curse that came with the Fall was an increase in pain during childbirth. Genesis 3:16 reveals to us how the Lord turned to Eve and said, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children…

How many of you mother’s out there are familiar with this part of the curse? A couple of dads may be too if they were near mom during delivery…

Now, keep that in mind as we jump over to Genesis Chapter 4, and we read about the first children ever born to mankind. The very first verse here introduces us to Cain. Now, we all know what happened to Cain, but I want you to notice something here in this verse: “Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man from the LORD.

You see, this is the first child born to mankind. This was the first baby born and that means that it was the first child born under the curse. There were no pain killers then, no epidurals. Eve would have felt the full effects of the curse as Cain come into the world. Even so, Scripture doesn’t say anything about her pain. What it does say though is her reaction to his birth. “I have acquired a man from the LORD.

Can you feel the appreciation in those words? She looks at Adam and says, “The Lord has given us a child. He has given us a son.” I can only imagine the emotion there in those moments following his birth. Those parents, the very first in human history, saw this baby as a gift, and they knew God had given him to them.
