Corrupting the Sacred, Part 2

Considering the nature of our world today and how sensitive society has become, it should come as no surprise that efforts have been made to produce Bible translations that go out of their way to avoid confrontation, the marginalization of various peoples, and just plain ol’ hurt feelings…

One such example came in 1995 with Oxford’s Inclusive Version. This was the first “politically correct” Bible, being based on the traditional New Revised Standard Version, yet being altered in such a way as to remove gender-specific language. The result of course was a terrible and inconsistent mess, stripping the Bible of not only its voice and positions, but also corrupting the integrity of the message in the process. Consider these two comparisons between the Inclusive Version and the King James Version

King James Version Oxford’s Inclusive Version
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” “For God so loved the world that God gave God’s only Child, so that everyone who believes in that Child may not perish but may have eternal life.”
John 5:26–27 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.” “For just as God has life in Godself, so God has granted the same thing to the Child, and has given the Child authority to execute judgment, because of being the Human One. Do not be astonished at this.”

The effect would be laughable if it were not so tragic! Despite what the sensibilities of the modern world declares, gender is real and it is necessary! To alter the timeless Scriptures by infusing into it modern – and arguably faulty – philosophies does nothing but destroy the integrity of the Word! Such notions are responsible for perhaps the most blatant example of this kind of action: the Queen James Bible.

Also known as the “Gay Bible,” the Queen James Bible was produced – by anonymous composers – with the intent of utterly removing all negative or condemnatory references to homosexuality throughout the Scripture. The very name of this version itself is a tongue-in-cheek reference to homosexuality, and if I may be so bold, a clear act of attention-seeking. Like so many others, by removing altering the inspired Word of Scripture, those behind this version distort the core message. While some feel free to take it upon themselves to improve the Word, editing it here and there, omitting this phrase and that verse in an effort to produce a guide that better reflects their ideals and expectations, they forget that we all have been warned against doing so…

“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.” – Revelation 22:18 & 19
