Look back now at verses 6 & 7 in our text in Matthew:
“And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.”
At midnight, at the least expected time, His arrival is announced! Just when they least expect it, that’s when the time comes!
Though He tarries, He is right on His own time, and just as the bridegroom in the parable, so too will Christ come in the midnight of our lives, when we all are most apt to be slumbering in apathy or indulgence!
The Book of Revelation gives us plenty of insight into how suddenly and how unexpected this return will be.
Chapter 22, verse 7: “Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.”
Revelation 22:12 – “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”
Behold, I come quickly! I will come suddenly, it says!
The bridegroom is coming, and it will happen when you least expect it. Be ready…
Just as the virgins, when He comes, we too will go out to meet Him, lamps in hand!
“Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” – 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 –
When that cry is heard, we are told even the “dead in Christ” will go forth from their graves to meet Him!
John 5:24-29 says
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man. Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.”
I want to be ready with my lamp and with my oil when that happens! I don’t want to be caught off guard! I don’t want to be in utter darkness when I awake to a lampless midnight…
For the foolish virgins though, this was the reality before them…
“Waiting on the Bridegroom” returns next time…
