Look at the next few verses there, 2 – 4:
“And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.”
Look at the next few verses there, 2 – 4:
“And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.”
Moving on, we find the parable continuing…
“Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom.”
Through the Old Testament, we find 353 prophecies dealing with Jesus’ first coming – all of which He fulfilled already. The statistics behind these prophecies are remarkable, too, and sooner or later I’ll share a few of those numbers here for you to contemplate.
What’s really astonishing though is that there are at least eight times more prophecies concerning His second coming!¹
Going into this bit of Scripture, I want you to think about something: Is God ever surprised about anything? Does anything ever catch Him off-guard? The truth is No; He’s omniscient. He knows everything that has ever happened! He knows everything that is happening! He knows everything that is going to happen! Nothing has ever surprised God.
When we look around at our world today, most of us cannot help but feel a sense of anxiety. No matter what side of the political spectrum you find yourself on, there is an air of conflict we cannot seem to escape, a burden of dread as we wait for the next shoe to drop. In reality, it need not be so. For those who believe, those who have been washed in the blood of Christ, who have accepted the salvation that He alone provides, no matter where this world is heading, we have another destination all together. That’s what I want to look at over the next few week: Where is the church going?
I just want to take a moment today and wish you all a merry Christmas! I pray that it’s a blessed one for you, full of life and love, great sights and sounds, full bellies and full hearts, and endless good cheer. Most of all, I pray that on this day that is so often – and so easily – sullied by merchandising and commercialism, you remember what it’s all about, and what the celebration is meant to commemorate in the first place. This is not about Santa. It’s not about presents, or food, or eggnog. It’s about the birth of our Savior, a babe born some 2000 years ago who ultimately paid a price for each of us that we could never pay ourselves. Thank God for Christmas!

Those who are burning in Hell, those who will yet be cast into the fire, were not thrown into darkness by a vengeful god. They made a choice! An eternally regrettable one. They set their destiny by filling their plate with the lusts of the flesh! They anchored themselves to Hell – just as so many who are alive today – with every single sin. Christ is the only hope any of us have! Jesus is the only way to avoid the torment of Hell!
One day, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess the sovereignty of the Lord! Doubters and believers alike will all stand before the King at some point. Will you stand before him in the light of salvation?
He’s begging, him, this rich man. He knows it’s too late for him, but he is begging in this passage for an opportunity – some way or another – to warn those headed in his footsteps. What happens next? This figure he sees as Abraham answers, and he says what? He says they have the Scriptures, let them read them!
